Some teenagers are happy to chat away with their parents in English. But others don’t want to chat with their parents in any language! Well, we’ve just published a book which may be able to help you with that.

“English Dialogues for Secondary School” is full of dialogues written with teenagers in mind. The English progresses from elementary to upper-intermediate level. There are realistic conversations between teenagers and their parents, sisters and brothers, friends and teachers. And teenagers talk to shop assistants, a careers advisor and a university admissions officer too. Ten of the dialogues focus on tricky grammar, and all the dialogues include vocabulary lists and comprehension questions with answers.

Reading the dialogues with your teenager will encourage some interesting conversations, maybe even in English! I’ve spent many years living with teenagers, and I’ve taught lots of other people’s teenagers. I’ve used this in-depth experience to try to make the conversations realistic, but also humorous.

These extracts will give you an idea of some of the topics covered:

“A: It’s almost eight o’clock. Get up!

B: I’m tired.

A: If you miss the half-past-eight bus, you’ll be late for school.”

“H: I wish I was eighteen.

B: I know. Only three more years to wait. Won’t it be amazing?”

“E: Is it okay if my boyfriend comes round on Saturday?

R: I didn’t know you had a boyfriend?”

“B: But I don’t need to work hard.

A: Why not?

B: I can get all As without doing much work.”

“A: Do you know what you want to do when you leave school? Have you made any plans?”

“S: I don’t know about you, but I’ve had it up to here with teenagers. My three go to bed at two o’clock in the morning and don’t get up till one in the afternoon.

H: They spend every waking moment glued to their mobile phones.”
